Russell Eco-Sanctuary is 200 hectares of private land and a District Council Reserve between Pipiroa Bay (at Okiato, near the car ferry) and Te Wahapu Road (about half way to Russell). It includes some of the “best” forest on Russell Peninsula and large, diverse wetlands.
Since 2016 we’ve been working hard in the Eco-Sanctuary to remove introduced predators. The results are outstanding. With predators at such low numbers the forest and wetlands are thriving and full of birds ……including kiwi, of course!
You can experience this special place on the “Bay of Islands Walkway”. ‘Stage 1’ and ‘Stage 2’ of the walkway from Okiato to Russell are within the Russell Eco-Sanctuary. For information and maps visit: http://www.boiwalkways.co.nz
Landowners have kindly granted permission for public access along the walkway. All the landowners require dogs to be kept on a lead and to stay on the track.
The “Bay of Islands Walkway” passes through Russell Eco-Sanctuary, enabling you to experience this special place.
